From June 24-25, the TUM IEAI in collaboration with a delegation from Japan representing ISO/IEC SC42 held a Human-Machine Teaming Workshop hosted at the TUM Think Tank. The two-day event brought together international experts to explore use cases, ethical considerations and emerging standards in Human-Machine Teaming (HMT). The alignAI Doctoral Network also participated in the workshop

Over two days of keynotes, use cases and panel discussions, the workshop provided a multidisciplinary platform to reflect on:

  • Ethical and governance challenges in Human-Machine Teaming (HMT)
  • Standardization efforts including ISO/IEC TR 42109 and ISO/IEC 25589
  • Psychological and organizational factors shaping AI integration
  • Real-world examples of teaming across healthcare, education and safety

Contributions from speakers such as Christoph Lütge (TUM IEAI), Fumi Maruyama (AIST), Erwin Schoitsch (AIT), Akihisa Morikawa (WITZ Corporation), Barbara Atim Ritah (SC 42/WG 4), Miki Hashimoto (Mitsubishi Electric), Michael Weilandt (DGfdB), Frederic Andres (NII), Anna Keune (TUM), Yuchang Cheng (SC 42/WG 4), Auxane Boch (TUM IEAI), Emilia Tantar (CEN/CLC/JTC 21), Michel Hohendanner (TUM) and Nobu Hosokawa (SC 42/WG 4 Convenor), enriched the dialog with practical, interdisciplinary and forward-looking insights.

During the networking dinner, IEAI alignAI doctoral candidates Julia Li and Simay Toplu had the opportunity to introduce the alignAI project, outlining the shared commitment to value-aligned AI development across diverse domains. It was a valuable moment to connect with international colleagues working at the intersection of AI, ethics and standards.

We look forward to continuing these conversations and contributing to the future of human-machine teaming through interdisciplinary insight, critical reflection and responsible innovation. We thank the delegation from Japan for their generosity and time, and hope to see future collaborations take shape over the upcoming months.
