Experts from LMU, TUM, Technical University of Denmark and University of Copenhagen Convened to Discuss Current Issues in Education and AI
The last panel of The Responsible AI Forum on May 20th, 2026 closed with a timely discussion on the use of AI in education. Moderated by Prof. Nicole Lønfeldt, the panel brought together experts Prof. Christiane Lütge, Prof. Anne Keune and Prof. Sneha Das to explore the opportunities and risks that AI is already presenting and may pose in the future. The event offered a lively conversation on topics such as creativity, mental health, the importance of adapting to the changing nature of education and co-creation.
AI’s Role in Creative Learning
A main topic of the evening was the use of AI in education and creativity. Opening the discussion, Prof. Lønfeldt asked the panelists how AI is reshaping the way students create and learn. Drawing from her experience as Chair of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) at LMU, Prof. Lütge talked about the surprizing ways youth more comprehensively and creatively express their ideas when using AI as a collaborator on school projects.
Prof. Keune from TUM expanded the discussion, referencing her work combining AI with design technologies and materials such as fiber crafts to explore creative uses of AI in education along with doctoral candidate Xiaoyu Wang of the EU-funded alignAI project. She spoke on how decision-making is a strong aspect of student autonomy when working creatively with AI, particularly when collaborating with generative AI on idea generation.
Student and Educator Mental Health in the Age of AI
Prof. Lønfeldt then turned the conversation toward the role of AI in both student and educator mental health. She noted how the topic was especially relevant to her own research focus on child and adolescent mental health at the University of Copenhagen. The panelists stressed the importance of educator engagement with AI’s role in student mental health. For instance, students may experience anxiety related to how their work may be graded as well as about the future of their career and the skills they are developing.
Speaking about her work with students in computer science, statistics and data analysis at the Technical University of Denmark, Prof. Das emphasized in particular the growing impact of AI on early-career computer scientists and students still learning the field. If skills such as coding are outsourced to AI, what might remain for a human to do? What kind of foundation in coding do students today need to succeed in the labor market?
The discussion then switched to the educator’s perspective, as Prof. Lønfeldt asked how teachers themselves are navigating these shifts. Teachers also experience anxiety and uncertainty around the changes that AI might bring to the field.
Prof. Lütge asserted in regard to the impact of AI in education: “I think it’s easier now for everyone to admit…we are not fully in charge, and that changes the role of the teachers”.
Educator AI Literacy and Adapting the Education System to New Needs
It will be key to understand how to best foster AI literacy in teachers and to set realistic goals around which aspects of AI systems are relevant to learn in an educator role. Prof. Keune pointed out that students learn best when they design personally meaningful projects, and that students and teachers should collaborate to figure out what those might be. Educators should also reflect on their own experiences and be prepared to rethink aspects of the education system that may change, such as evaluation mechanisms, career prospects and curriculum design.
Closing Remarks
Lastly, Prof. Lønfeldt closed the session by inviting remarks from each of the speakers, who in turn, each underscored the rapidly shifting landscape of AI use in education and the need for educators and students alike to stay informed as well as open-minded about how AI can be integrated into education.
