Assigning shifts or tasks to employees is omnipresent in the workplace. Though Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms are not commonly used in scheduling algorithms (yet), these algorithms have the potential to analyze various data sources as input for scheduling and solve scheduling problems efficiently. However, if AI algorithms are used in scheduling, consideration of ethical aspects will be crucial in order to make the system “human-centered”. A step towards such human-centered scheduling could be a system that considers employee preferences in task allocation. The Brief “Algorithmic Scheduling in Industry: Technical and Ethical Aspects”explores the idea of such a system.
