KuanXin Chen, student at the TUM School of Management, is among the seven student assistants contributing to the successful implementation of the MoralPLai Project. Read his reflections on key project topics and learn more about his motivation to join the team.

What inspired you to join the MoralPLai project?

I was inspired to join the MoralPLai project because it aims to educate and communicate the ethics of artificial intelligence through innovative methods like drama. This approach fascinates me as it emphasizes the importance of dialogue between scientific research and the public, making complex topics more relatable and engaging.

What are your thoughts on combining research with the arts?

I believe combining research with the arts is a powerful way to bridge the gap between academic concepts and public understanding. I have experience using drama to promote awareness of issues like marine pollution and children’s nutrition. Transforming complex theories into accessible artistic forms makes them more engaging, approachable, and easier for the public to connect with.

How comfortable would you feel taking guidance from AI on a personal issue?

To be honest, I’m not entirely comfortable taking guidance from AI on personal matters because I’m not fully familiar with its current capabilities and limitations. While I recognize its potential, I would approach AI guidance with caution, especially when it comes to personal issues where human judgment is crucial.

Would you consider relying on AI for advice in a moral dilemma?

I have significant reservations about relying on AI for advice in moral dilemmas. Morality is a deeply human characteristic and moral dilemmas often involve complex debates across different ethical doctrines. These nuances are difficult to translate into simple algorithms or utility functions that AI can process, which makes me hesitant to depend on AI for such decisions.

What role do you think creativity plays in exploring complex ethical questions around AI?

Creativity is essential in exploring complex ethical questions around AI. It allows us to think outside the box, challenge existing frameworks, and develop innovative solutions. By fostering creativity, we can explore new approaches and perspectives that drive progress and help us navigate the ethical challenges posed by advancing technology.
