Chithra Madhusudhanan, a former student at the TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology, is part of the latest cohort of student assistants and volunteers supporting the successful implementation of the MoralPLai Project. Explore her reflections on key project topics and discover what inspired her to join the team.

What inspired you to join the MoralPLai project?

I previously worked as a software engineer while also pursuing dance and storytelling. I then pivoted to an interdisciplinary Master’s in Politics and Technology at the TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology. During this time, I collaborated with Dr. Franziska Pozler, the current lead of the MoralPLai project, to explore the powerful role of research-based theatre in AI ethics. This experience reinforced my belief that the intersection of art and technology is both fascinating and essential. With experience in dance and writing, I understand the deep connection between the arts and society. MoralPLai brings AI ethics into this mix—an opportunity I wouldn’t want to miss!

What are your thoughts on combining research with the arts?

I think the arts can be an excellent medium for conducting research or communicating research findings. Whether it is a movie depicting the day-to-day emotional bond and interactions between an elderly person and a care robot or a police procedural showcasing hacking techniques in everyday settings, the arts can communicate, influence and connect with a broader audience.

How comfortable would you feel taking guidance from AI on a personal issue?

I do use AI to support certain tasks in my daily routine, primarily to enhance productivity. This includes improving documentation and presentations as well as assisting with coding. However, I currently limit AI use to tasks that boost efficiency and avoid relying on it in situations where I believe emotional intelligence is crucial.

Would you consider relying on AI for advice in a moral dilemma?

For now, I wouldn’t fully rely on AI to resolve moral dilemmas. But then again, it depends on the dilemma. If it concerns choosing between a yummy unhealthy dinner option versus a healthier alternative, I might be fine letting AI decide! But for dilemmas where empathy is required, I wouldn’t be comfortable with AI making those decisions for me. It’s not just about the perceived correctness of the outcome, it also has to do with my uncertainty about how disassociating from moral questions would impact the human(e) in me!

What role do you think creativity plays in exploring complex ethical questions around AI?

Creativity enables us to explore questions by stepping out of our comfort zones. As such, it is very beneficial for examining complex ethical questions in AI, as it allows us to navigate new roles, situations, and consequences. I found storytelling to be a very impactful medium for examining the impact of care robots in domestic settings. Moreover, creativity helps foster interdisciplinary collaboration, which is crucial when seeking answers to ethical challenges.
