The MoralPLai project partners bring diverse philosophical, technical and artistic perspectives to the research topic, each contributing valuable insights into the project’s key areas. Meet  Felix Mayer, Honorary Professor at TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology and Director at TUM Center for Culture and Arts and read his reflections on the core research topics.

Would you consider relying on an LLM-based chatbot for guidance in a moral dilemma?

No.

In what ways can art help make complex scientific concepts more accessible to the public?

Art can help in several ways, making scientific concepts more accessible to the public. Some of these ways are:

  • Visualizing: For example, complex structures, theories and intellectual edifices.
  • Emotionalizing: Art evokes emotions and curiosity, fostering a deeper connection to science. This emotional resonance helps non-experts relate to scientific topics on a personal level.
  • Interactive Learning: Tools like science-themed video games or hands-on activities engage audiences in exploring scientific principles through creative interaction.
  • Metaphors and Analogies: Artistic metaphors place complex ideas into familiar contexts and enable intuitive understanding while maintaining depth for experts.

How can interactive or immersive art experiences, such as research-based theatre, enhance public understanding of scientific advancements?

Interactive and immersive art experiences can significantly enhance public understanding of scientific advancements by making complex concepts more relatable, engaging, and emotionally resonant. For example, the MoralPlai Project can strengthen dialogue and critical thinking, strengthen the emotional and creative engagement of the audience and hopefully find and reach a diverse audience beyond the scientific community of experts.

What role do cultural institutions, such as the TUM Center for Culture and Arts, play in shaping public perception of technological advancements?

Cultural institutions like the TUM Center for Culture and Arts can play a pivotal role in shaping public perception of technological advancements by bridging the gap between science, technology, and the arts. Our institution tries to foster creativity, inspire curiosity, and provide accessible platforms for engaging with complex technological concepts.
