IEAI Event: Speaker Series on “Pandora’s Bots? Studies of AI Moral Advice and Their Implications for Human Decision-making” with Eyal Aharoni
June 16 – 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
With its Speaker Series, the TUM Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence invites experts from all over the world to talk about ethics and governance of AI. These events serve as an important platform for sharing new research and exchanging knowledge.
We are pleased to announce that the speaker for this session is Prof. Eyal Aharoni.
Eyal Aharoni is an Associate Professor of Neuroscience, Philosophy and Psychology at Georgia State University. Prior to his current appointment, Prof. Aharoni served as a Research Associate for the RAND Corporation. Aharoni completed a postdoctoral fellowship with appointments at The MIND Research Network for Neurodiagnostic Discovery and the University of New Mexico Psychology. He has also held research positions at the Research Center for Virtual Environments and Behavior and the Institute for Social, Behavioral and Economic Research, where he studied human-computer social interaction and the perception of agency. Prof. Aharoni earned bachelor’s degrees in psychology and religious studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). He earned his Ph.D. in psychology at UCSB where he also served as a research fellow for the MacArthur Foundation’s Law and Neuroscience Project.
The topic of this session will be “Pandora’s Bots? Studies of AI Moral Advice and Their Implications for Human Decision-making”.
AI is increasingly relied upon to support morally consequential decision-making. How much do people trust AI moral reasoning – and how much is too much? In this talk, Prof. Aharoni will report the results of the first moral Turing Test to understand lay perceptions of AI moral commentary, discussing the implications of over-trust in AI systems in the context of medical decision-making, where high-performance AI systems could erode human performance. Finally, he will outline a novel method for assessing and improving human-AI collaboration in high-stakes medical decisions.
This TUM IEAI event will take place on June 16th, 2025 at 11:00 (CEST) at Marsstr. 20, Room 607.
