IEAI Event: Speaker Series on “AI in Border Security: Opportunities and Pitfalls” with Maria Chiara Aquilino and Henri van Soest

In anticipation of the IEAI co-hosted side event of the 2025 Munich Security Conference on Automating Human Security, we are pleased to announce that the speakers for our next IEAI Speakers Series session, Maria Chiara Aquilino and Henri van Soest, will present on their work related to AI and human security.
Maria Chiara Aquilino is a Junior Analyst at RAND. Based in the Brussels office, she has primarily worked on EU and UK commissioned studies on violent extremism, EU security and defence policy, and climate change. Working primarily in RAND Europe, her research focuses on radicalisation, extremism and EU policies. In the past, she worked as a scientific research trainee in terrorism and violent extremism at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission and as a research assistant at King’s College London and Leiden University. She has a degree in international relations from King’s College London and holds an MS.c. in crisis and security management from Leiden University.
Henri van Soest is a Senior Analyst at RAND Europe and a Professor of Policy Analysis at Pardee RAND Graduate School. His two main areas of research focus on energy and natural resources governance, and AI governance. At RAND, he has managed studies involving global teams for a wide range of clients including the European Union, the UK government and the Dutch government. He has also worked on space logistics, cybersecurity, critical infrastructure protection, disaster risk reduction and societal resilience. He previously worked as a researcher in energy policy and digitalisation at the University of Oslo, as an analyst in the cleantech startup sector and as a corporate governance and corporate social responsibility analyst in a multinational bank. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge, with a thesis on the regulation of cybersecurity in the European electricity system. He also holds a joint LL.M. from KU Leuven in Belgium and the University of Zurich.
